Colonel Owen J. Hopkins (1844-1902) grew up in Bellefontaine, Ohio. He enlisted as a soldier at the age of seventeen and saw four years of fighting during the Civil War with the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and 182nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
